Case study · Studio study
A dense financial dashboard that still respects a morning brain.
Studio study with a working title. Not a named-client claim.
Overview
Ridge Capital is a study in professional density: portfolios, activity, and exceptions for operators who live in tables. Not a consumer fintech gradient. Permissions are the product.
The challenge
Financial UIs either infantilize the user with cards or punish them with an unfiltered grid dump. The work was a hierarchy that surfaces risk without hiding the ledger, plus an API that cannot leak one book into another.
Objectives
Role-based views that are not just CSS hiding
A table system that filters, exports, and does not jank
Audit on mutations
Numbers that round the way finance expects
Strategy
Design the authorization model with the interface. Every widget names its resource. The visual system is graphite and cream; maroon is reserved for attention, never decoration on a P&L.
Discovery
We listed the questions an analyst asks before coffee. Those questions became default views. Everything else is a filter, not a new page.
UX
Persistent context: entity switcher, date range, book. Drill-in keeps the parent crumb. Destructive actions require a typed confirm when the blast radius is wide.
Design
Monospace for figures, sans for language. Charts are quiet. We designed the loading skeletons to match the table geometry so the layout does not jump.
Engineering
Row-level security in Postgres, an API that returns exactly the columns the role may see, and a frontend that never concatenates a forbidden field 'just for the chart'.

Voice
“Replace with a risk or operations voice: 'I can see who changed the book.' That is the quote worth keeping.”
