Case study · Studio study
An editorial site that still behaves like software.
Studio study with a working title. Not a named-client claim.
Overview
Atelier is a content-heavy publication surface: issues, pieces, authors, and a reading environment that is quiet on purpose. Built to show how we do marketing and media sites when typography is the product.
The challenge
Editorial sites rot under plugins and hero videos. The job was a system for publishing, a reading column that holds, and performance that does not punish a long article.
Objectives
A content model an editor can love
Typographic hierarchy that survives CMS authors
Partial hydration — JS where it pays
RSS, SEO, and share cards that are not an afterthought
Strategy
Astro or a server-first Next.js setup. MDX or a CMS with a strict schema. Motion is CSS. The archive is a first-class route, not a leftover.
Discovery
We listed every content type that had ever appeared in the old site, including the ones used twice a year. Those rare types got a generic 'piece' rather than a snowflake template.
UX
Home is a board, not a carousel. Article is a column. Authors are people with a body of work. Search is honest about what it can find.
Design
Display type with nerve; body type you can read at midnight. Maroon is a rule and a pull-quote rule, not a wash.
Engineering
Static where possible, on-demand revalidation when editors publish. Image pipeline. Canonical URLs. Structured data for articles.
